Four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes are playing a crucial role in the construction of the Triangle building, one of the most architecturally distinctive high-rise projects currently under development in central Paris. Delivered by Liebherr and operated with crane expertise from HEXAGone Services, the project is being executed by international construction group BESIX.
The development highlights how advanced crane technology enables efficient construction in dense urban environments while supporting complex architectural designs.
Advanced Crane Solutions for Complex Urban Construction
Designed by world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Triangle building features a striking pyramid-shaped form, measuring 180 metres in length and just 35 metres in width. Its unconventional geometry and restricted city-centre location have created demanding lifting and logistics challenges.
To address these constraints, the project team selected four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes, known for their flexibility, compact footprint, and high load capacity.
Two cranes are installed on portal bases and are engineered to climb externally with the building as construction progresses, reaching hook heights of 187 metres and 152 metres. The remaining two cranes are mounted on foundation anchors, with tower heights of 85.5 metres and 95.7 metres. This strategic crane configuration ensures continuous material flow while minimizing disruption to surrounding streets and buildings.
Liebherr 280 HC-L: Designed for High-Density City Projects
The Liebherr 280 HC-L crane is ideally suited for large-scale urban construction projects. Key performance features include:
- Maximum lifting capacity of up to 28 tonnes
- Compact slewing radius of just 7.5 metres
- Minimal out-of-service position, improving site safety and space efficiency
These capabilities allow safe and precise lifting operations in confined spaces, making the crane a preferred choice for high-rise construction in cities like Paris.
A Sustainable, Mixed-Use Landmark for Paris
Beyond its engineering complexity, the Triangle building is designed as a modern mixed-use development. Once completed, it will accommodate:
- A hotel and office spaces
- Co-working areas and retail outlets
- A cultural centre and healthcare facilities
- A nursery and community services
The project also aligns with Paris’s sustainability objectives, incorporating energy-efficient building systems, renewable energy solutions, and low-carbon mobility strategies.
Collaboration Powers an Iconic Construction Project
The successful use of four Liebherr 280 HC-L cranes underscores the value of close collaboration between architects, contractors, and lifting specialists. Through the combined expertise of BESIX, HEXAGone Services, and Liebherr, the Triangle building is progressing efficiently toward becoming one of Europe’s most recognizable architectural landmarks.
